Crypto sent on the wrong network: what to do next
A completed crypto transfer can still fail to arrive when the receiving service does not support the network used. Do not assume recovery is possible. First identify the asset, network, destination, custody model and transaction status, then follow the receiving platform's documented support or recovery process.
Identify the actual failure
A wrong network is different from a wrong address, missing memo or tag, unsupported token, pending confirmations or a platform processing delay. The block explorer and receiving platform's deposit page help separate these cases.
Recovery depends on control and support
A self-custody destination may be recoverable only when you control compatible private keys and understand the network. A custodial destination depends on the platform's technical support and policy.
Protect credentials
A legitimate recovery process never requires you to reveal a seed phrase or private key. Use only the receiving service's official support channels and its documented tool, if one exists.
Confirm the transaction before taking action
Open the transaction in the correct network's block explorer and record the asset, token contract where relevant, destination address, network, status and transaction ID. Compare these facts with the receiving platform's current deposit instructions.
This step prevents a common misdiagnosis. A transfer may be pending because it lacks confirmations, require a memo or tag, use an unsupported token, or have been sent to an incorrect address. Each case has a different recovery path and may have no recovery path at all.
Why the destination matters
If the destination is a self-custody wallet and you control the relevant keys, technical compatibility can determine whether the asset is visible or can be managed. That is not a reason to import recovery credentials into unknown software or websites.
If the destination belongs to an exchange or other custodian, you do not control the receiving wallet infrastructure. The platform may be unable to recover the asset, may support only certain networks or may offer a limited recovery process for eligible transactions. Its published policy controls the available options.
A safe diagnostic sequence
Stop sending additional transfers to the same destination. Check the asset and network on the original transaction, then check the recipient's supported networks and any memo or token requirements. Keep the transaction ID and screenshots of the official deposit instructions for a support request.
Contact the receiving service through its official support channel. State the network, asset, destination and transaction ID accurately. Do not pay a person on social media who claims to recover funds, and never share a seed phrase, private key or remote-access code.
Set realistic expectations
A blockchain confirmation shows that a network processed a transaction; it does not mean the receiving platform can credit it. Coinbase states that it cannot recover funds sent on an incorrect network, while it also documents recovery or automatic-return paths for some qualifying cases. Such exceptions are not a general promise.
Recovery can depend on technical compatibility, custody control, platform policy, asset support, network support and the exact transaction. The safest practice remains prevention: match asset, network, address and any memo or tag before confirming, ideally using a small test for a new route.
Before you act
- Check the transaction on the correct network's block explorer.
- Confirm whether the issue is network, address, memo, token support or confirmations.
- Use the receiving platform's official recovery or support channel only.
- Never disclose a seed phrase, private key or remote-access code.
Questions this page answers
Can crypto sent on the wrong network always be recovered?
No. Recovery depends on the destination, custody model, network compatibility and the receiving platform's policy.
Should I send another transaction to fix the first one?
No. Additional transfers can create another problem. Diagnose the original transaction first through official channels.
Methodology and limits
This is a transfer-safety diagnostic, not a recovery service. It does not guarantee that a platform, wallet or network can restore an asset. Follow current official instructions for the exact destination and never disclose recovery credentials.
